Japan repairs Paro riverbank damaged by Cyclone Aila
1 February, 2011 - Come this monsoon, 50 households in Hungrel gewog, Paro, can breathe easier.
A year-long project to reinforce 560 meters of riverbank of the Du chhu and Pa chhu was formally completed yesterday. The occasion was marked in a simple ceremony attended by residents of the gewog and the Japanese ambassador to Bhutan, Hideaki Domichi.The ambassador who is in the country on his last official assignment, said he would continue to promote Bhutan Japan relations. He pointed out that this is the 25th year of diplomatic relations between the two countries.The project commenced in April last year after the banks of the river were damaged because of cyclone Aila in May 2009. Under its grass roots grant project, the Japanese government decided to repair the damage.The river reinforcement project was funded by the Japanese government at a cost of Nu 4.1 M. The royal government provided Nu 820,000 to the project.Besides protecting residents, houses, paddy fields, and orchards, the reinforced banks are expected to protect Rinpung Dzong and the gewog center.The Japanese government also provided USD 180,804 in November last year for a bridge in Bumthang and a recycle garbage truck for Thimphu city.
