High and dry Against their expectations stalls fail to lure customers Not fair: Very few showed up Regional Friendship Trade Fair 31 January, 2011 - To the dismay of its organisers, the five-day regional friendship trade fair in Phuentsholing is experiencing a dearth of customers. The supposedly commercially active town, it was hoped, would draw a record number crowd to such exhibitions. Bhutan Chamber of Commerce and Industry general secretary Phub Tshering said they expected about 6,000 people to visit the various stalls exhibiting an array to local and regional products. From handlooms, handicrafts and Assamese raw silk to electronics, cars, furnitures, construction equipment and agriculture products, the trade fair displayed them all to lure Bhutanese and customers from across the border.But only about 300 visit the fair everyday, Phub Tshering said.About 18 exhibitors from Nepal and about 30 from India including the northeast region along with agriculture ministry supported local...

For a self reliant power sector BPC plans to establish training and manufacturing centres in Jigmeling 29 January, 2011 - The Bhutan Power Corporation has big plans to establish a training and a manufacturing centre in Jigmeling, Sarpang, to meet the needs of the countrys hydropower sector. The plans, which are still in a conceptual stage, is to train Bhutanese in the operation, repair, maintenance and management of hydropower generating plants. To be established within the 1,185 acre special economic zone in Jigmeling the plan is also to establish a centre of excellence that will manufacture turbines, switchgears, transmission lines and other appliances. The BPC managing director, Dasho Bharat Tamang, who is accompanying the prime minister on the mid term review tour, said the initiative is an attempt to reduce dependence on expatriate workers and also provide employment opportunities.The training centre will complement the need of the centre of excellence as the trainees will be int...

Learning centre for disadvantaged children The store which will be converted to a learning centre 29 January, 2011 - An early childhood care development center (ECCD), which the Thimphu City Corporation is opening soon at Motithang, is expected to solve the problem of numerous labourers, the municipal authority had employed. Without anyone to look after their children, labourers employed by the TCC bring along their children to their workplace every day. Children spend the day playing near the road where their mothers work. Many mothers carry their children on the back and work from 9am to 5pm everyday. This is happening, they said, because private day care center are beyond their reach and they have no baby sitters at home. We cannot keep our children alone at home.
