Chairperson of SAARC, Lyonchhoen Jigmi Y Thinley, told a gathering of delegates in Dhaka during his four-day visit to the Bangladeshi capital. The faith of Bhutan in SAARC has never faltered for we believe in the goodness, wisdom and determination of the South Asian people to come together to overcome our differences, and to realise our vast potentials as a cohesive social and economic region, said Lyonchhoen at the banquet hosted by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday. Bhutan hosted the 16th SAARC summit in April 2010 for the first time after it became a member 25 years ago. It will be the government of Bhutans endeavour to ensure that the momentum and positive environment generated by the Thimphu Summit is fully utilised in the pursuit of collective agenda, he told the gathering. On the bilateral front, Lyonchhoen said that relations between the two countries are progressively diversifying and deepening, both in material as well as less tangible forms, but equally meaningful ways, to encompass a range of fields including culture, trade, environment and issues that concern us as members of the global community. He said that Bangladesh, today, has become a very popular source for affordable but high quality products, such as garments, cosmetics, household items and a range of consumables among others. Similarly, Bangladeshi universities have become a favoured destination for Bhutanese medical students, while cultural exchanges and other forms of interaction have been steadily increasing. I am particularly pleased that, much to the benefit of our fa! rmers, a pples and oranges, among others, from the orchards of Bhutan are gaining their popularity here, he said. It is indeed a matter of deep satisfaction that both our peoples and their leadership should be so devoted to the enhancement of our relations.Lyonchhoen said that any relationship between countries or individuals must not be taken for granted. Friendships endure and gain greater value through nurturing, he said, recalling Prime Minister Hasinas first state to Bhutan after the electoral victory of the Awami League in 2008. It was a very special gesture that has furthered our mutual goodwill and affection for each other. We also recall with appreciation your very effective participation in the sixteenth SAARC summit in Thimphu. These two visits to my country, made in quick succession, amply demonstrate your personal regard for my country, and the significance of this has been fully understood by my people.By By staff Reporter
