Conman cops four years
13 January, 2011 - Thimphu district court last week sentenced a 25-year old man to a four-year imprisonment term, after convicting him for larceny, theft, impersonating, service theft and being in poossession of stolen property.
Namgay Tshering was arrested on March 22, 2010 near the Thimphu district court, following a complaint from a 64-year-old man, after he was robbed near the Lungtenzampa bridge. Namgay Tshering deceived the old man, when they met near the Lungtenzampa bus parking. He offered to help the old man reach his house, by offering a lift in a car that was not his, and robbed the man.He followed the same style - befriending strangers - had favourite locations Chang lam plaza, bus parking, Changbangdu and the vegetable market area and preyed on victims over 50 and women.The first incident occurred on January 1, 2009 when the accused befriended Dendup, 55, after they met at the vegetable market in Thimphu. They walked till the Chang lam plaza and the accused asked him for Nu 2,000 saying he had to clear his credit at a restaurant. He told Dendup that he would return the cash immediately, but never returned.After he was caught, police recovered around Nu 50,000, jewelry, mobile phones and other peoples identity cards. The convict, who is unemployed, had been on a conning spree, deceiving and robbing elderly people in Thimphu since January 2009. According to police records, he was first caught on October 22, 2009 and there were already complaints against him, four cases of deceptive practice, two robberies, two larcenies and a service theft.
