S/Jongkhars tshogpa elects

Thromde tshogpa 24 January, 2011 - The candidates were aged between 26 to 52 years. The thromde also elected its youngest and only woman candidate, 26-year old Sonam Lhamu. Three candidates are businessmen, two are farmers, while one had also left a manager job in a private firm to contest the elections.Heres a look at Samdrup Jongkhars five tshogpa elects.

Samdrup Jongkhar Toe tshogpa, Ugyen Dorji
The oldest candidate, Ugyen Dorji, 52, owner of Pema Tyres and a fabrication unit, was unanimously elected. He secured all of 19 votes in his favour from Samdrup Jongkhar Toe. Ugyen completed class eight in 1975 from SUMI, Kalimpong and served in the erstwhile Bhutan government transport service (BGTS) as an inspector from 1976 to 1987. Building a river protection wall and walking footpaths along the Dungsamchhu, like the one at Dhoti Khola in Phuentsholing town, is a priority besides finalising the service centre. The other priority is be relocate the workshops outside town. His mother, wife and son came to vote. He remained at the polling station set up at the Samdrup Jongkhar primary school until late in the afternoon recording who had come to vote. Jigme Wangchuk, 27, youngest of three brothers, secured eight YES and two NO votes.The former Druk Phuensum Tshogpa registered member and manager of SNT equipment hiring in Samdrup Jongkhar completed high school from Mongar higher secondary school in 2003.He left a job that paid Nu 6,000 a month to become a tshogpa that has a salary of only Nu 2,000 a month. Its not for the money but to show youth that participation in democracy is important and that everyone do t! heir bit to make it successful, Jigme said. Winning was no surprise for Norbu Wangdi, tshogpa elect from Samdrup Jongkhar Mae. He went for jogging as usual and then turned up at the polling station after 8am dressed in his best gho. He had served as the Samdrup Jongkhar town tshogpa two times before. Of the 30 votes cast four voted against him.His family owns various retail businesses in Samdrup Jongkhar and Thimphu as well. He is the general secretary of Bhutan-India friendship Association Samdrup Jongkhar chapter. Born in 1962, he completed class ten from Daranga English high school in early 1980s. He has a daughter and two sons.My main business would be appraise the mayor of the problems (water for now) of my constituency and aid him in solving them, he said.Kibse tshogpa, Tashi Tobgyel
Of the 68 votes cast 55 voted in favour of Tashi Tobgyel from Kibse to be the tshogpa from Dewathang town.The shopkeeper and contractor, has served as the Dewathang town tshogpa for seven years.Tashi was born in 1964 and he completed class ten in 1986. He married the following year and has three children now.Tashi Tobgyel is also the chairman of the Dewathang Milk cooperative and the Dewathang town tshogpa.The town has remained the same for the past 20 years, said Tashi. Ugyen Peljore, 37, a former Peoples Democratic Party member, secured 26 YES votes and 10 NO votes in the Bangtsho demkhong.He dropped out from class five to become a monk and after seven years he the left the monkhood to become a farmer. He is the fourth eldest in a family of seven children. Only his elder brother and his wife came to vote as others are not registered in the thromde.He came to the polling station before 8 am to help in the arr! angement s.
