Double Fault: Is selling the fake part of an endangered species twice as bad as the real thing?

Perspective 18 January, 2011 - Thimphu police detained two men, after they were caught selling fake rhino horns on January 14 around 2 pm.

Police said the men were caught red-handed following a tip off, where they were informed the men were looking for potential buyers in Changjiji.They were trying to sell them for Nu 1M. During the interrogation, the main suspect, a 32-year-old from Wangdue, confessed the horns were duplicate and was brought from Lucky bazaar in India for Rs 750. The suspect worked as a forest guard at the Royal Manas national park. He revealed his accomplice, a 36-year-old from Bumthang, sold a similar horn for Nu 0.4M to a resident of Lobesa in November last year. Police source said that, after having sold the horn for Nu 0.4M, the man had handed in Nu 30,000 to the main suspect, stating that was the original price he could fetch. Both the horns were seized and sent to the forest department for verification.Police source said that, even if the horns proved to be original, the men would still be charged for deceiving people, among others.
